FAQ

Membership

How do I join the Fitness Center?
Fill out a Membership Packet and return to Staff with $35 initiation fee paid by cash, Mastercard, Visa, Discover, or check.

Can I use the Fitness Center as soon as I sign up?
Yes, once your membership packet and initiation fee have been received by the Staff, you are welcome to use the facility the same day!

What are the membership options?

Can my children or spouse become a member?
Children over the age of 18 and spouses of current NFC members may join the fitness center. 

Can my initiation fee be waived? Are there discounts or special sign up options?
The initiation fee will be waived for new employees who attend the New Employee Orientation. Other promotions are also held during NFC events such as Open House each quarter. 

As a contractor if I join and pay the Biannual fee, will I be able to get a refund if my contract ends here at SSMC?
Should your contract end at SSMC, please notify the staff immediately to cancel your membership. Refunds are considered case by case. 

What happens if I forget to renew my Biannual membership by the due date?
If you do not renew your biannual membership by the due date, you may be asked to pay the late fee of $35 or the full price of the 6-month term depending on the date that you renew. 

Is there a late fee if I allow my membership to expire?
Yes, a $35 late fee will apply for memberships that expire. 

How do I cancel my membership?
Fill out a Membership Cancellation Form (and payroll deduction form if you are a payroll deduction member) and return to staff. 

 


Fitness Center Hours

What are the fitness center hours?
The Fitness Center hours are 6:30 am to 7:30 pm (Monday- Thursday) and 6:30 am to 7:00 pm (Friday). Summer hours begin after labor day and are from 6:30 am-7:00 pm (Monday - Friday).

What are the busiest times of the day?
The busiest time of the day is usually from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm. 

Will the fitness center remain open when the government is operating on an altered schedule?
When the government is operating on an altered schedule the fitness center will generally operate on the same altered schedule. The fitness center follows the guidelines and operation status listed on www.OPM.gov. 

 

Group Exercise

Are the group exercise classes included in my membership?
Yes, all weekly classes are complimentary with each membership type.

Is there a limit to how many people can be in a class?
Due to safety concerns each class has a given maximum amount of participants.  View page two of the group exercise class schedule and descriptions for specific class max. 

Which group exercise classes do I need to sign up for in advance? 
You are required to sign up for ALL Cycle classes and each Specialty Class (held once or twice per month.)

Do I have to physically come down to the center to sign up for a class? 
You may use the member portal online to sign up for Cycle class. If you are unable to use the portal, you may contact the staff via e-mail or phone 24 hours prior to the class. You are required to physically sign up for any Specialty Classes on your own. 



Lockers

How does renting a locker work? 
If you wish to rent a locker simply inquire with the staff regarding locker availability.  If there aren't any available at the time, the staff will place your name on a wait list in which you will be contacted as soon as a locker becomes available.  

When do I have to renew my locker?
All lockers must be renewed every 6 months. Locker renewals are due on June 30 and December 31. Lockers that are not renewed by the due date will be inventoried, emptied, and become available to other members on the wait list. 

Can I switch lockers if I don’t like my current location?
Yes, if you currently rent a locker and would like to switch locations the staff can place your name on a wait list for another location.  When another locker becomes available, you will be contacted and at that time you will be able to switch locker locations.  If there is a locker available upon requesting the switch, you may then switch immediately. 

How long does it take if I’m on the wait list?
Lockers become available sporadically and the staff does their best to notify the waiting members as soon as a locker becomes available. You can always check-in with the staff to see how many names are before yours on the wait list.



Personal Training

Does the fitness center provide personal training?
Yes, the NOAA Fitness Center has 3 full time Nationally Certified Personal Trainers who provide personal training at an additional service cost.

Will a trainer be assigned to me or can I choose?
If you have a trainer in mind that you would like to work with, you are welcome to choose that trainer provided his/her availability matches your needs. If you do not have a trainer in mind, one will be assigned to you depending on your goals, trainer specialties, and trainer availability. 

Are there limited times of day I can train with a trainer?
The NFC trainers are able to train clients during all operation hours. Time of day may vary depending on each trainers availability. You will work with your trainer to schedule frequency, dates, and times of your sessions.

Can two people with totally different fitness goals train together in a buddy session?
Yes, two people with different goals may train together with one trainer. The trainer will utilize equipment, space, and time to help each individual work on their goals during one session. 

 

Day to Day/Miscellaneous

Can I try out the gym for a day? Is there a limit to how many times I can try out the gym?
The Fitness Center does offer day passes for $5 per visit. On the first visit, you will be asked to fill out a guest waiver. Once the waiver is completed and on file, there is no limit to how many times you may use the fitness center.

Do fitness assessment and consultations require an appointment?
Yes, fitness assessments and consultations do require appointments. You may contact the staff to schedule an appointment for any of the membership services offered at the NFC. 

Are any services walk-in friendly?
A tour of the Fitness Center and joining the fitness center are walk-in friendly.
 
Does it get so busy that I will have to wait for a machine?
Though busy hours are subject to change, it usually does not get so busy that one has to wait for a machine. 

I’m new and don’t know what to do with the machines. How do I learn?
Scheduling an equipment orientation is a great way to learn about the machines.
